Is Jesus the only Way?
The only path to salvation is through Faith in Jesus Christ as our Savior and Lord, that He died on the cross for our sins and was resurrected in order to fulfill the scriptural promise of reconciliation to God the Father. Many world religions would have you believe that Jesus is just one path of many to reach heaven. Moreland and Muehlhoff explain, “In order to promote harmony, most people today subscribe to the idea that all religions are different yet equally valid paths to God.”[1]
There are many problems with this idea, most importantly, it is not the truth. Even other world religions, within the many paths to the top of the mountain idea, reject the idea itself. Islam, as many religions do, claim exclusivity to truth and salvation. “Muhammad would scoff at the idea that Islam is merely one path to God.”[2] note Moreland and Muehlhoff. It is counter to reason to state that you can reach heaven and God by following many paths because they are all true, except many of the paths claim they are the only truth. If any of the exclusive paths are true, then the whole concept of all being true would have to be false. The many paths to the top of the mountain breaks the basic Law of Non-Contradiction.
Although many religions, including Islam, attempt to lay claim to Jesus as a part of their truth, they cannot. The Bible states: “Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’” (John 14:6). The eyewitnesses to Jesus make very clear that He is the only path to God. The Bible confirms this exclusivity with, “And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12). And Paul, another witness to the resurrected Jesus stated, “For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.” (1 Timothy 2:5).
The Bible is correct about the claims of Jesus; no other religion or combinations of religions are a path to salvation. The truth is that all paths do, in fact, lead to the top of the mountain, and to reach the top of the mountain is to stand before the judgment of God. Without Jesus, one will only find the Justice they deserve. With Jesus, one will find the mercy and salvation they do not deserve. Each of us should understand that we don’t actually want Justice, we want mercy! This can be seen clearly in Psalm 143:2, “”Enter not into judgment with your servant, for no one living is righteous before you.”(ESV). We have all broken God’s Law and the Justice every one of us deserves is death and separation from Him.
To some, it feels unfair that Jesus is the only way to salvation. To that, I’d say: thank God He gave us a way at all! None of us deserve a gift this big, yet it’s given so freely. Imagine a forest nestled in a deep canyon. It’s filled with people who, for some reason, just can’t stop setting things on fire. Before long, the whole place is nothing but smoke and flames. Suddenly, a helicopter swoops down into the northeast corner. Jesus steps out and says, “Come with me if you want to live.” Instead of running for the door, people start complaining: “Wait, why is He the only way out of here?”
People also claim Christianity is “exclusive” because it points to one path. But honestly? It’s the most inclusive faith there is. God sacrificed His Son for all of humanity. This is made evident in John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”(ESV). And further stated in John 2:2, “He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.” (ESV). Paul expounds on this by defining all believers in Christ to be equal! We can read this in Galatians 3:28, “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus”(ESV). I am not sure how much more inclusive one could get.
Consider the “deal” we’re offered: God provides a way in for the undeserving. He makes that way accessible through belief and faith. He opens that door to every single person on Earth. And once we’re through that door, He makes us all equal. That sounds like a pretty great deal.
